extreme running

I seem to have deleted my post somehow so here goes attempt 2.
Normally this wouldn't be extreme running. Normally someone would not take on a 15K with out properly preparing. Well there is nothing normal about attempting this 15K tomorrow. I have done 2 long runs, one 6 miler in November and one 8 miler this past Monday. That is not good. I haven't been running more than 1-2 times a week and I haven't seen the inside of the gym in the past 2 months. Wow what happened?!?!
I attempted the 8 miler on Monday because I wanted to see how bad I would feel and how bad of a job I would do on Saturday. Well the happy news is I can complete it. The not so happy news is I will have to run it anywhere from a 10:30 to 11 min/mile pace and I will be hurting afterwards for about a day. I recovered well so I'm not too worried about the pain. I know I could have done it so much better, meaning at a better pace but it will have to do.
My goal after this run will be to get back into a routine. I want to train for a half marathon with Goober. I want to push her mileage-wise but the good thing about it will be that I can take it easy speed-wise. I have to come up with a plan ASAP so that come Monday I am on a plan and no slacking this time!!!
Wish me luck.

Morning 4 miler

So I got up and was a bit excited about running. Well at first I snoozed my alarm and crawled back into bed....but I was awake so I got up and got ready. I knew it was going to be a good "short" and semi-easy run since I was running with Goober. I am so proud of her. I know mornings aren't her preference but she did great! I hope she does sign up for a half marathon with me next year. :)

I digressed...I got up, got dressed and headed out. Started with a walk to give the Garmin some time to pick up the satellite. Once it picked it up, we were off. It was slow at first but I welcomed it. It has been a long time since I have done a run in the morning that I was happy to not be out there trying to beat myself up. It was dark and very quiet in the park and I was so not looking forward to running it back on my own but I survived. I didn't like that the lights were off at one point during my run back but oh well.

So we did a little over 2 miles out in about 30 minutes that I took off on the way back because I knew I would be late to get ready and therefore late to work (what else is new). The run back was more intense and it felt great that I warmed up the first 2 miles. I cannot wait to load up my results to see the difference between the run to Woodhaven versus the trip back. I will definitely be doing this again. I hope she is up for it on Thursday morning though it would have to be earlier and we have a late night the night before. Well we shall see.

I'm a bit nervous about the 15K but I know I can make it. I am not breaking any records but i am definitely going to make it. :)

Run for my car

Am I warm enough?? Actually I was too warm because my hat, and gloves came off and I unzipped the jacket a few times and rolled up my sleeves.

I decided to run to Goober's house since my car was parked over there. I needed to get it eventually so why not go for a run over that way. It wasn't a bad run. It was a night run and I was alone but the nice thing is that the street is pretty lit and semi populated if not by walkers, mostly dog walkers, definitely by passing cars. I felt safe enough to run it again. It wasn't a fast run but it was a run! It was almost 2.5 miles. Yay to picking up the mileage again!

A weeks worth of an update

So after my last run in Florida, I did a race the day after I returned. I struggled like you wouldn't believe and have rested since then. I was so inspired while in Florida. I swore I would stick to my training schedule. However, even after ensuring I had a car to get me around, I failed to find the nearest Bally's fitness club. I know of the one in Orlando/Kissimee but I failed to look one up in south Florida. :( So I did 2 runs and that was it. Boo to me.

I came back to NY and the next day I had a 4 mile run. Not to bad right?!?! Wrong! I think it was the worst run I have done to date. Okay maybe there was one or two bad runs during half marathon training in the wonderful heat but I felt so uncomfortable, sluggish...ugh! I had very little motivation and it didn't help that I knew of no one else running that day. I had to come up with many ways to keep myself in it. One mantra I kept repeating to myself...."I'm as light as a feather". After not sticking to my training and eating not so healthily. I truly did suffer during the run and was glad it was over...check out my face here:
Oh yeah I was struggling. Look at me here trying to convince you and myself I was a-OK! NOT!
I was so not a-OK. Well after this I went home to soak in Epsom salt thinking I would be great the next day. I so wasn't for the next week. I had a stiff neck and upper back for a whole week. Tiger balm, 2-3 deep massages, more soaking...and nothing. It drove me nuts! I even exercised by dancing my booty off with a Xbox Dance Central game and it helped very little. I was at a loss. Somehow and eventually the pain and most stiffness went away. I still have a little stiffness over my left shoulder.

This week I have made attempts to go running. Monday night I wanted to run but it didn't work out. I just didn't want to run alone so I was trying to work it out with Goober but it just didn't pan out. Yesterday I attempted again and this time it worked out. It was raining for most of the day so I expected to run in the rain. However, to our luck it was dry the whole time we ran. We ran through the park. I hadn't run through this park ever and I'm glad I did. It is quiet, lonely and a bit spooky on a raining night so I'm glad I wasn't alone. I am glad someone guided me on a new running path and mostly I was glad I didn't do it alone. My forerunner didn't register the first quarter to half mile but overall I was proud of Goober for keeping up despite having run in the morning. It was slow for me but I didn't mind being that I felt so out of shape. It was a great warm up for me so tomorrow I am definitely doing a 4 miler. I have to ready for a 7 miler on Sat or Sun. I can do it!!! I just cannot wait to get this 15 K over with and then be able to do some fun and easy running. I need a break before I get back to half marathon and eventually marathon training.

Oh and speaking of marathon training...I officially qualify for ING 2012 NYC Marathon! I was suppose to qualify after the 15K but I forgot to email NYRR about that and so I am done with my 9+1 guarantee in track! Yay!!!!

Fort Lauderdale run

Today I drove along part of the Fort Lauderdale coast and these were some of the views.

Since it was hot I decided I would lay out and get some sun and then later run along the sidewalk next to the beach. However, this is how the day got once I had my bathing suit on....*sigh*. Of course it would get cloudy. It just isn't meant for me to get some color on these pale legs of mine.
Once the sun began to set I went out for a run I did about 3.25 miles. I felt good. I did run slowly though. I really need to start doing something about that but not this week as I get my body back into running shape and not before a race. I have to figure out the details of this race on Sunday. I am kind of not looking forward to running in the cold weather again...oh well.

Miami run

So I find myself in Miami and it was an absolutely beautiful day to run. I did my long run not knowing if I could make it but I did. I ran about 6 miles. It was a beautiful run along the broadwalk and these are the views that I got a peak at as I ran. I actually stepped onto the sand and wondered for a bit what it would be like to run in the sand but I am grateful I didn't actually do so. After stepping on the sand to just take a few pictures I ended up with so much sand as I realized my sneakers are very "holey". They are definitely not good to run with in the sand. I would end up with sand bags and it would be horrible to run it...oh I can imagine the blisters..eek!

Back to running

This picture was taken as I finally head out for a run after over a week of being off due to my sickness. I was sick on Tuesday after Halloween. I felt slightly better on Wednesday night into Thursday but after a long work day on Thursday I was back down on Friday straight through Monday feeling slightly better by Tuesday. I was finally better enough Thursday. I took the day off instead of taking Tuesday off for Election day.

I got a 3.75 mile in although I was aiming for 4 miles though I should only have been doing 3 miles. Not bad after having over a week off. I had a little difficulty with gunk in my system but I was good after my run.  I am so happy to be back on track. It was a beautiful fall day and I didn't run alone as I had my shadow running right besides me.

Sick

So although I tried to take a few measures to attempt not to feel worse...I failed.

I am sick.

I didn't go running last night. I thought about going to the gym but knew I would not be able to drag myself to the gym. Today it looks like it is just not happening either. I just want to sleep and I will need to since I work late tomorrow. Thank God I have Friday off. I cannot wait.

Now it would be helpful if I just didn't eat a cupcake and a cheese puff pastry thingy...oh well, I will deal with my battle with sweats once I am feeling better.

Blah!!!!

Preventive measures

I do not want to get sick! I do not want to get sick!! I took 2 Tylenol had a cup of tea and am about to make some more. I had an airborne...what else can I do for now. I may need to get Echinacea.

Yay to new sneakers

Yay to new sneakers! My new sneakers came in today and I cannot wait to put them on for my commute home! I don't feel so great but I'm hoping to be able to maybe take them out for a spin.....we'll see.

5 miles on Halloween

Dressed up as a runner and set out to run 5 miles.
Lesson 1: don't eat a whole Chipotle burrito bowl for lunch if you plan on running in the evening.
Lesson 2: do not stand to close to the corner when waiting for the light to change.

I actually ran about 4.8 miles wanting to puke most of the way. I had to stop and pull myself together to keep going. When I got home I just had a spinach smoothie, seriously my new obsession.

After I hit the supermarket to buy some Granny Smith apples because I do want to make my Spanish spinach dish again I got a way too close for comfort view of a car accident. As I waited for the light to change, I was standing on the edge of the side walk and just so happened to step back from the corner and right in front of my eyes an accident took place pushing the car onto the corner I was on. It happened so quick I don't know if I would have had enough time to react if I was on the edge....eeeekkkk....happy halloween!

Poland Spring Marathon Kickoff Cancelled

So the Poland Spring Marathon Kickoff was cancelled after all thanks to the unexpected snow and about 1000 trees that feel in Central Park. I am disappointed but at the same time grateful. I was not ready to run in this cold weather especially after working over 12 hours the day before. I got to sleep in and I am glad. Besides my biggest supporter wasn't around so she would not have been there on the side lines. I am also glad because I feel like there is this unsaid competition which I really want nothing to do with so I'm glad it didn't happen because I so would not have been into it. Of course I would have competed anyways. :)

Everything happens for a reason.

Unexpected snow on a Saturday workday

Pictures of the unexpected snowfall we got on Saturday, October 29, 2011. I really thought it was only going to be rain. Well it was more than that. Thank God Queens was not as badly hit as NYC.

3 mile run

So I headed out sporting one of my new Fall/ Winter running shirts. I forgot about it as I bought it a few months ago. I loved it! I has pockets in the front and it is long. Most importantly it is pink! Not black or blue but pink! I need to buy more colorful running clothes. I may just have to spend the money because the bargain stores don't usually have pretty, vibrant colors.

Thursday workout, making up Wed workout.

Alpine Pass work out
Total of 315 cal burned. Biked 52 minutes but didn't record total mileage. I tried a new workout and I did alpine pass work out. Feels good. Every time I get on the bike at the gym, I wish I had an actual bike to take outside.

Not only did I work out but I also tried a new recipe I received in an email from Tasting Table. Espinacas a la Catalana (Catalan Spinach). I loved it. I could have done a better job given more time but if my quick sloppy attempt was good then I know I will love it more when I make it slowly and less rushed. I ate the whole thing! See the picture of it on the left. Yummers!!!

No workout but a new smoothie

So I was in no mindset to run 4 miles today. I am tired and I have a painful mouth. I didn't sleep well. I was grinding my teeth and then some car with an annoying beeping sound as they backed up woke me up in the middle of the night. The beeping unfortunately went on for longer than I would have cared for.

I ate horribly today just cause I ate anything that would be edible. I feel horrible and I feel fat today. My thighs are rubbing together, my belly feels swollen...I just feel ugh!

The only good thing that came out today was this beauty to the left. That is a spinach smoothie. I have been complaining about not getting enough veggies in my diet so I read about a spinach smoothie the other day so why not try it. I bought bananas, blackberries, and strawberries. I had some spinach I needed to use before it became bad and so after looking up a recipe here it is.

3/4 cup of 1% milk
3-4 cups of spinach
blended until liquified and added
medium banana
~ 1/4 cup of blackberries
1 tbsp of 0% fage yogurt
1/2 cup of strawberries
1/4 cup of OJ

Yummers!

Got my workout in!

How I love food!!!

So I have been absolutely horrible about my eating habits but I told myself yesterday no more!!!

Yesterday I had a yogurt for breakfast. Then I had my oatmeal for lunch along with coffee and a roll because I essentially missed having it during breakfast. Well I actually sat at my desk too long doing work and didn't get up to make my oatmeal at a decent hour.

For a "coffee break", I went out and had a peach pastry with a small latte. I then came back to the office with the left over pastry that belonged to my coffee break companion. It was some puff pastry with lots of creamy stuff inside and slightly dipped in chocolate. I had that despite not being hungry and I think I also had a small block of dark chocolate. Horrible!!!!

I got home only to have a bowl of Honey nut cheerios then later after a run I had a banana followed by 2 scrambled eggs with spinach, tomato and turkey cold cuts diced with a slice of buttered wheat toast.

I only had 2 healthy "meals" the whole day if I can even say that. I feel gross.

Lunch
Today I'm making a better effort. I had my fage yogurt. Unfortunately I didn't have a clean container to be able to have oatmeal. I also had a small coffee and a banana for breakfast. I would have had more for breakfast but I will settle for this now because this is all I have.

I went out early to get lunch so I could eat it at noon. Sure enough I was hungry. I got myself a salad from West Side market, a small roll, and some jelly with a low amount of sugar. I only ate about half the salad, maybe a little less. It has soy beans and garbanzos and so I became full fast. I have been craving sweets lately so I was good and ate half the roll with about a tbsp of jelly to sweeten it up and take care of my sweet craving.

Right now it is 2:15pm and I am getting hungry. I have a peeled grapefruit I bought since Monday. I think I may eat that and see how I feel. I may pick on my salad a bit more. I have to work out after work so I want to make sure I am hydrated and not hungry so that I may be able to hold off to eat after the gym.

I really do have to make a conscious effort to eat and get back to a consistent running/cross-training schedule. I don't want to have extra weight on me as I run...it just doesn't feel good. Let's see how I can be the next few days, weeks, and months.

Running at Bayside Marina

These are the views I take in at Little Bay Park after running along Joe Micheal's Mile in Bayside. Isn't it beautiful? If I could do this everyday it would be heavenly.

Running 3 miles

So I stepped out and ran for 3 miles. As I thought about it I was going to die because I haven't been running consistently lately and I haven't really ran 3 miles outside in a long time. But I am grateful to say that I survived and considering the circumstances I kicked butt! I do want to improve my time and according to my Garmin I didn't do so hot pace-wise but that is okay I may forgive myself for the 9/17 race but I will not for the October race. I hope I can get back into it...cause I will have no choice come 15K in December.

Yay and go me!

2 days of running

I went to the gym and ran on Monday and Tuesday. I couldn't get up this morning. I NEED to sleep more. It is such a challenge to be in bed by 10 or even 10:30 at times but I will aim to be in bed no later than 11pm!
I may run after work but we will see what time I get out of here and get home. I want to give my new insoles a try.
For this week I am just going to aim 5-6 times and for 30 mins. I just need to get back into running. Well Sunday I may push it to 4 or 5 miles depending on how I am feeling and the weather. I then will get back to training next week given how I feel. I need to push myself a little more. I want to keep it up and I want to beat my time so I have to do it!

Well lets see how today and/or tomorrow goes.

EEEkkkk no training and no blogging...

What do I suck at most...restarting my training or blogging?!

Well both but I suck more at blogging than I do at restarting my training.
My last run was on Tuesday, August 16th and my last blog was August 11th.

Lets visit the excuses of why I haven't worked out in almost a week. Wednesday, August 17th there was no training. I didn't make it into the gym in the morning and there was no way I could make it up at night. Thursday there was no training either. I was too tired from the prior night of romantic boat sailing around the lower part of Manhattan to get up and I can't recall a good excuse for not going after work. Friday is a rest day on the training calendar but after not running for 2 days I really should have gotten up and gone. However, I didn't and that evening I went out so there was no way I was going to make it up afterwards. I think my excuse for Friday was needing to rest for the Great Urban Race on Saturday. I guess I'm glad I did rest but at the same time maybe just maybe I would have shaken the cobwebs off a bit and wouldn't be in as much pain as I am in now.

Saturday I had a great time running around the island of Manhattan figuring out clues with my good friend Pat. We did it in better timing than last year and boy did I get a workout becasue again I'm still in pain. Maybe I'll post about the details of the Great Urban Race. I wish that more of my friends did it. It is so much fun! But back to my running...I guess running around for about 4 hours is good enough to equal a 3 mile run.

Sunday came and went and although I was scheduled for a training session I didn't make it. I was truly exhausted from running around all day the day before then from being up late due to a birthday celebration at Studio Square and then some personal fun time.

Well on Sunday night I came to terms with my less than stellar attempt at restarting my training and I have decided to start from scratch. I have about a month left until the day of the race. I could have been further along in my training and in my ability, but it's okay, I will restart and give it another go. I have also begun to realize that I need to relax on how I eat. My appetite continues to be that of a person who is training for a half marathon, and I am not anywhere need that level now. More is going in and not enough is being burnt off. I have gone from teeter tottering at 130-131 to 134.2...close to 135. Tsk tsk Lizzie. It's okay we'll adjust our eating habits and we will restart the training. It will all balance out with time.

I also think I have come to terms with the fact that revenge...is not a good motivator for me. I am my own best motivator and so chop chop...get to it!

SMH!

Day 10 and so far I have missed 3 work outs! I don't even remember where I left off last I think I last reported my Thursday run which I was suppose to do after work. Yup that didn't happen. Then Friday came and went and I didn't make up my run.
Saturday I did do my 3 mile run. I took it easy and glad I did especially because it was hot! Well not as bad as it has been in the past but hot enough. I ran around noon time so that probably wasn't a good idea. Nonetheless I got 3 miles done and it felt good! The easy part again did help.
Sunday came and went and the rain became my excuse for not running...tsk tsk!
Monday was a rest day and I took it as a rest day. I should have ran but nope didn't.
Tuesday came and I stayed home thanks to having a horrible night of not sleeping due to the pain in my mouth. Braces how wonderful.

Day 4 training postponed until after work and Runner's Magazine

So Day 4 is here and
1. I went to bed late last night
2. was anxious about mom's trip to Guatemala
3. was anxious about finding one too many of those centipede buggers in the room, I swore all night they were on me
4. I was still tired from my interval training the day before.
Needless to say I didn't get up and out of bed to do my 3 mile run this morning. I will, however, do it after work. I don't want to get up tomorrow to make it up and it is only 3 miles so I will get it out of the way.

I hope to update you on my run tomorrow. I will try not to forget how I feel during my work out. All I know is that this morning it was absolutely beautiful for a run it was nice and cool. Oh well.

I would like to take advantage and write about a few thoughts that I had about running and what I read in September's issue of Runner's World. Side note: I absolutely love Runner's World. It is the only magazine other than US that I can read cover to cover. It offers great advice and inspirational articles about training or on some amazing runner out in this world.

In any case here are some things I would like touch upon:
1. What I would like to do differently this time during my training
2. NYC ING Marathon inspiration
3. Mantra repeating vs. being crazy
4. Including my mental state during my runs in my journal/blog entry
5. Running Fears.

Okay so maybe I won't tackle all these today as I may not get any work done. I do want to hold on to my job so I'll tackle one today.

An article I read touched upon getting the most out of the easy run. I have to say that what should have been an easy run in my 1/2 marathon training was not really an easy run. It might have been due to the time constraint. We ran in the morning and had to get back by a certain time to get ready for work. It may have been due to the fact that we didn't venture too much away from our usual route. Again due to time constraint we really couldn't venture too far from home or include a car ride somewhere else to run. It is understandable that the easy run was not the most enjoyable during my prior training. Well this time around I want to keep my easy runs as light and enjoyable as possible. I want to take in the scenery and smell the grass/flowers/sea water..etc. I would like to hit any road other than Union Turnpike and Queens Blvd. That alone makes me look forward to my runs.

My goal for my easy run: enjoy the scenery, change up the route, and take it easy. As the article said I will run 1-2 mins slower than my pace. I need to make sure I recover well for the next hard workout/ run.

Day 3 Interval Training

So it is day 3 of my 6 weeks training to running a faster 4/5 mile race.

Today's mission: interval training day.
I had to do 5 X 400 M hard and in between recover with walking and/or jogging.

How I did: It was hard to guage how hard I should go. Every so often I would go very hard and every so often I didn't go as hard as I would have wanted to go. During 1 lap I actually gave up about 100 meters before reaching the end. I also almost gave up before my last 400 M but thanks to my running buddy who was still going around the track doing her Couch to 5K training, I motivated and wrapped it up. I did 5 X 400 M as hard as I could.

How I feel now: I feel good now though my left leg felt a bit shaky. My left hamstring especially inner has been a cause of concern and it is still worrying me.

How to improve: I need to stretch better. The one thing I suck at. I also need to figure out when I will fit in a strength training session in during the week. I also may need to gauge and figure out how fast I should be going.

Notes/feelings: I'm glad to be back out there and running. I am looking forward to seeing my time improve. I will take it easy the rest of this week. Sunday I have a long run of 5 miles...let's see how that goes. You think it should be cake after a 1/2 marathon but I still am hesitant when the mileage is any more than 4 miles. :)

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Day 2 of 6 weeks training towards faster time!

So here I am on 8/9/2011 and embarking on a new training to run a 4 and 5 mile race faster. I have decided I will document my journey this time because I did a half marathon on 7/31/2011 and yet other than my gps watch documenting my pace and heart-rate I never did anything to keep track of what I did during my training. I have no recollection of how easy and/or hard a work out was and no way of knowing where exactly I need to improve.

When I started jogging again after my hip issue, the big big pain I use to get on my right hip, I was good about tracking my treadmill runs. I recorded the calories burned, the distance and time I ran. I occassionally did comment on whether it was a good workout or if I had a hard time. Then when I took my runs outside, actually when I started my training, I stopped recording anything at all.

After hearing someone elses version of my athletic ability, or actually someone's incorrect account of my athletic ability, it was a nice kick in the butt. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe its a matter of how I see things and how they saw things....but my gut tells me they were just wrong. I now have decided that unless I write it down then I won't recall how it really was. So now besides wanting to kick butt, thanks for the motivation, I want to document and take it as a tool to help myself improve.

Again I am embarking on a 6 week training schedule to improve my pace at a 4 mile run I have on Saturday, September 17, 2011. My goal is to get under a 9:28 pace/mile as that was my best time for a 4 Mile race I did March 27th, 2011.

I did a relatively easy 3 mile run today as it took me more than 30 mins to get it done...hmm I should have recorded how long it took. I think it was less than 35 mins. I took it easy because I haven't run since the 1/2 marathon which was 9 days ago. My legs are still working a little tightness on my left hamstring, my breathing needed some help and yes I could go faster but that is what we will be working on these next 6 weeks. I'm nervous yet excited. I really just want to get faster and more fit.

Day 1 down...well day 2 as day 1 is a rest day, hehe, now 38 more days until race day!
